FAMILY WILDLIFE DAY SANTA ROSA PLATEAU, MURRIETA CA
The picture above is of myself, my husband, and my amazing daughter Abbey, from a personal Facebook post I also shared to the Proactive Parenting Gifted, Sensitive & Creative Children blog. I shared the events of this day because of a snake we found, or more pointedly my daughter Abbey found, on the trail while we were hiking.
It was a baby rattler that was right in the middle of the narrow trail, it was the same color as the dirt on the path, and from a distance was invisible...to most. We always put my daughter at the front of the group whenever we take hikes, her heightened awareness and high emotional and sensory sensitivity is a positive when out on the lookout for dangers. Although out of this element and due to her inherent and highly visual modality many think she is often distracted or in a daze, don't be fooled, she doesn't miss a thing. Even though my husband and I weren't paying attention to what lie ahead and all three of us were looking from side to side at the sights, Abbey stopped in her tracks when she identified the very small but venomous snake up ahead on the trail at least 25 feet in front of us. I shared this personal post to my blog and now here because I thought it was a great example of how inherent traits that are seen today by many as negatives - or even disorder - when correctly understood and utilized can lead to great things.
Inherent heightened awareness and emotional and sensory sensitivities found in gifted and highly creative children are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed as disorder, where the gifts are medicated or therapized* to come back down to the "norm." Over-awareness and sensitivity that when under utilized can lead to anxiety, excess physical energy and other issues, when focused on a passion or interesting task, can lead to greater potential and ability in a particular area - like snake-spotting - and many others :).

Affective Development Of
Gifted Students In Nontraditional Talents
This article that I also shared to my Proactive Parenting Gifted, Sensitive & Creative Children blog is not one of my own, but I feel it is really important to share with parents of gifted and creative children. It is comprehensive and includes studies in support of the fact that unsupported highly gifted and highly creative children often present the same as those with ADHD and other disorders. Misdiagnosis is rampant among these populations of children and I feel a passion to advocate for the awareness of this issue. The quote below pinpoints the issue well, but the entire article is packed full of information and statistics and is very much worth reading.
"By way of illustration, confusion of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with giftedness and creativity has emerged as a concern. Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – IV delineates ostensibly precise circumstances and traits for determining which individuals have ADHD, these same descriptors signal several other student populations; highly gifted youth who are unchallenged in school, creative youngsters who find few outlets in which to demonstrate their creativity..." *Consulting with a medical professional is always to be considered, especially when after changes in parenting and other positive approaches have been implemented the child continues to struggle.

What Is Quality Time To Our Children?
The other day I was having a discussion with another homeschooling Mom from a gifted Facebook group I am a member of. I was replying to a post she made about her daughter who she homeschooled and spent every day with, wanting more time to "talk, talk, talk, well into the night," a time when most of us parents, homeschooling or otherwise, are near exhaustion. She wondered why her daughter would ask for more time to talk...Read the entire article
Our Children's Gifts Can
Show Themselves In Unpredictable Ways
I just wanted to share a little more from our family's personal story, something that has helped me to be a better and more supportive Mom to our gifted, highly sensitive & highly creative child. No, I wasn't always the somewhat-adequately-supportive parent I have come to be today :), more about that below. The image above is from my teen daughter's...

Homeschooling Our Out-Of-The-Box Kids
I've found that I often hear from young families of children soon to be school age, that the reason they are choosing to homeschool is because they feel their child just wouldn't fit in at a traditional school. Whether it was due to their child being highly energetic, or easily distracted unless doing something they loved, or highly sensitive and intense, or having unusual interests or a quirky personality that other kids just didn't seem to get, they thought these things would cause problems for their child...Read the entire article
My Coach's Hero
Some of you may know that I am currently studying for an international certification in Life & Relationship Coaching. So, I have my own coach :).
I can't believe I found her because so many of her views on raising and educating children match mine so closely, yet we come from such extremely different backgrounds it is almost eerie the similarities.
I love this post below where she shares with us who she calls "My Hero." A philosopher on children, that time has proven his genius, Janusz Korczak was the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit.
He was a Polish-Jewish educator, children’s author and pediatrician, who worked with orphans in Warsaw before and during World War II. Although he was offered sanctuary several times, he marched with 192 orphans to his death on August 7, 1942, at the Treblinka extermination camp. My coach, Ronit Baras's article is below, I hope you enjoy reading about this inspiring man, a positive and proactive parenting advocate before his time, who for his advocacy for the rights and respect of all children to become who they were born to be, has quickly become my hero as well.
"When I was studying Education, I learned some more about Korczak and his philosophy about children and the attitude to children touched my heart. At that point, he became my hero. The more I learned about him, the more I understood how far our society and in our education system are from this attitude..." Read the entire article
